Sci-fi film lambasted by critics and audience, yet gets a sequel on Netflix: Shocking or a sign of hope?

A sequel to a film typically signifies that its predecessor was a hit, critically acclaimed, or both.

Unexpected sequel of a controversial sci-fi film #

However, in the unpredictable world of film and television, this is not always the case. A prime example is one of Netflix’s science-fiction blockbusters, which, despite receiving mixed reviews from both critics and audiences, is set to return with a sequel.

The follow-up to a movie that garnered a lukewarm response at best may seem like a curious decision. Yet, it seems that the streaming giant is not deterred by this. The question that arises now is: Can this sequel outperform its predecessor and defy expectations?

« Rebel Moon: The Slicer » – A sequel despite the criticism #

The sequel in question is none other than « Rebel Moon: The Slicer. » Directed by Zack Snyder, this space opera resumes where its forerunner left off. The characters, Kora and her warriors, continue their fight alongside the inhabitants of Veldt, a village threatened by the Mother-World. Each individual is forced to confront their past before engaging in battle against the Kingdom’s forces.

Despite the anticipation that led to a sequel, the original « Rebel Moon » failed to impress critics globally. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored a mere 24% approval rating from critics. Metacritic rated it 31/100. On Allociné, it received a press rating of 2.6/5, with 13 press titles posting a review. The consensus? The film lacked conviction, didn’t meet expectations, was uninspired, poorly written, and poorly performed.

Box office success vs. critical failure: A paradox #

In a surprising twist, despite the negative reviews, the first « Rebel Moon » dominated Netflix’s most-watched programs upon its release in late December. On the surface, the numbers seem impressive, with 72.9 million views according to Tudum and 90 million according to Snyder. However, compared to other blockbusters released during the same period like « Don’t Look Up » and « Glass Onion, » which garnered between 100 and 200 million views, these figures seem rather modest.

The audience’s verdict was no more favorable. Nearly 520 Metacritic users rated it an average of 5.8/10. In France, 2,815 viewers rated the film, resulting in an average score of 2.5/5. These disappointing reviews do make one wonder: Will « Rebel Moon: The Slicer » be better than the first installment? Will it defy the odds and emerge as a surprise hit? It certainly might pique the curiosity of sci-fi fans. But we’ll only find out on April 19th on Netflix.

Here’s a list of the most controversial aspects of the original « Rebel Moon » film:
